Introduction

Following the decision of the European partners to build the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund (Sweden), Germany and Sweden signed a Memorandum of Understanding detailing their commitment for future collaborative projects. Both countries want to work together very closely on utilizing synchrotron and neutron radiation in the fields of materials research and structural biology.

This collaboration has been given the name “Röntgen Ångström Cluster”.

The region of northern Germany and Sweden offers a unique cluster of research infrastructures. DESY in Hamburg with PETRA III and FLASH, the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB) with BESSY II and BER II, Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht (HZG) and MAX IV Laboratory in Lund offer researchers excellent opportunities in the fields of materials research and structural biology.

Both countries set up a secretariat. The Swedish secretariat is located at the Swedish Research Council in Stockholm, whereas Germany’s is hosted by the Projektträger DESY at the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron DESY in Hamburg.
